YFS providing free meals for kids over summer
RAPID CITY, S.D. — With the school year almost at an end some families may have a hard time making up for the loss of school lunches. That’s where Youth and Family Services’ Summer Food Program steps in.
Starting May 31, YFS will be offering free lunch for children 18 and under.
It will be served at their Monroe Street facility and thanks to funding from the Black Hills Area Community Foundation the first 20 adults accompanying their child each day can also eat free. And seniors over the age of 60 can also step in for a bite.
YFS has been a part of the US Ag Department program for about 40 years, providing children with nutritious meals during the summer.
YFS Nutrition Services Director Darcie Decker says, “We also recognize the cost of food is skyrocketing and inflation is just hitting hard. Gas is continuing to rise. But food we’re seeing that increasing. And so this is a way for families to stop in and have a meal with us at no additional cost.”
The food program runs through August 19, no sign up is necessary. Lunch will be served at the Monroe Street Head Start from 10:30 a.m. till 12:30 p.m.
