Yellow Jackets reclaim the Homestake Trophy with victory over Hardrockers

RAPID CITY, S.D. – South Dakota Mines hosted Black Hills State on Saturday in the 137th Black Hills Brawl.

The Yellow Jackets pulled out a 24-17 win over the Hardrockers.

So BHSU reclaims the Homestake Trophy after the Hardrockers have had control of it for the past two years.

With the game tied at 10 at halftime, the Jackets scored first in the third quarter thanks to a 5-yard touchdown pass from Jamin Wurtz to TJ Chukwurah.

Black Hills State then extended its lead in fourth quarter as Nolan Susel scored from three yards out to make it 24-10.

The Hardrockers finally answered with 34 seconds left in the game.

Jayden Johannsen hooked up with Isaiah Eastman for a 20-yard touchdown.

– BHSU quarterback Chance Eben completed 16 of 23 passes for 139 yards.

– SD Mines quarterback Jayden Johannsen completed 29 of 57 passes for 350 with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

– The Yellow Jackets are off to their best start since 1951. They improve to 3-0 in the RMAC and 5-0 overall.

– The Hardrockers fall to 2-1 in the RMAC and 3-2 overall.

– South Dakota Mines will travel to Gunnison, CO on Oct. 8 to play Western Colorado University.

– Black Hills State will hit the road to face New Mexico Highlands on Saturday, Oct. 8.
