Yearly crime stats show that DUI’s are down from 2019

RAPID CITY, S.D. — A big drop in DUI’s in Rapid City last year – police say they were down 22% from 2019.

They say COVID-19 played a factor in the lower numbers of DUI arrests, as fewer people were on the road while restaurants and bars were closed.

RCPD says people still aren’t as comfortable about going out, but officers are operating as usual with added safety precautions on what they touch and where they go.

Capt. Scott Sitts, Rapid City Police Department, said, “We’re 100% operational. We’re at normal practices with – of course – officers being aware of COVID precautions. So with social distancing and mask wearing and making sure they’re also protecting themselves and also not to possibly transmit COVID also.”

While DUI’s fell sharply in 2020, there was an increase in overall crime.
