Woman identified in fatal Omaha Street crash

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Terri Leading Fighter, 37, of Rapid City, has been identified as the pedestrian killed during Tuesday nights fatal crash on Omaha Street.

At around 4:55 p.m. on December 29th, police were dispatched to the 1100 block of West Omaha Street for a report of a vehicle-vs-pedestrian crash that had just occurred. On arrival, police found a female who had been struck by an SUV lying in the roadway. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Multiple witnesses were interviewed and stated that the female was last seen walking into the road before being struck by the eastbound SUV. Surveillance video from the area was reviewed and corroborated the witnesses statements.

Police do not believe at this point that alcohol or speed was a factor on the part of the SUV driver. RCPD reports that Leading Fighter was wearing dark-colored clothing, stepped into the roadway without right-of-way, and had a high concentration of alcohol in her blood.

The extensive investigation and reconstruction of this crash are still ongoing. The investigation continues to be conducted by the RCPD’s Critical Accident Reconstruction Team with the assistance of the joint RCPD and PCSO Drone Team.
