UPDATE: Deadwood Police say fatal shot possibly self-inflicted

UPDATE 10:11 P.M. — Deadwood Police investigating the shooting death of a 28-year-old woman in downtown Deadwood last night say preliminary information suggests that the fatal wound was self-inflicted.

Officials say the investigation is still active and ongoing.

DEADWOOD, S.D. – A woman died overnight after being found with a gunshot wound on a Deadwood dance floor.

According to Deadwood police, officers were dispatched at about 12:30 Saturday morning to the 660 block of Main Street. A woman was reported “down on the dance floor,” says a release from the department.

Once officers arrived, they determined the woman had injuries from a gunshot. Lawrence County Ambulance arrived and medics began lifesaving measures but the woman was pronounced dead.

Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the DPD with the active investigation. Officials say there is no threat to the community. Lead/Deadwood Ambulance and the Lawrence County Coroner are also assisting DPD with the investigation.

The victim’s identification is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.
