Maintaining your furnace can keep you out of the deep freeze this winter.

Getting your home ready is easy if you know what to look for.

Have your furnace cleaned and tuned by a professional to make sure it’s in tip-top shape.

Changing the air filter on your furnace will also allow it to work more efficiently.

And to keep your furnace from working too hard, check for drafts.

Drafts can let cold air in and warm air out, so feel around the edges of your doors and windows, and look into getting the weatherstripping repaired if you feel cold air coming in.

Heat rises, so if you have ceiling fans, reversing them will mix the warm air near the ceiling with cool air near the floor, allowing you to keep the thermostat down.

And, especially if you live on a mobile home, make sure your pipes are in good condition and you have heat tape if necessary.

Checking these things now won’t just keep you warm, but it’ll also keep your wallet happy.

“Depending on what your energy usage is and how much you’re able to do, you can see significant savings, something in the neighborhood of I guess 5 to 10 percent,” said Marc Eyre, director of electric operations at Black Hills Energy.

Should you encounter a power outage during the winter season, Eyre reminds Black Hills Energy customers that they can get up-to-date information at
