7:00 AM UPDATE: New Winter Storm Warnings Issued

Up to a foot of snow could fall in areas of the Hills. Let's break it down.

RAPID CITY, S.D. – This is a developing forecast and will be updated with the latest information as it becomes available.

The latest road conditions in both South Dakota and Wyoming are available by calling 511.

SATURDAY, 6:20 A.M. 

GFS Snow Accumulation Kuchera Scale Model – pay less attention to the specific numbers and more to the distribution of snowfall amounts. The Southern Hills look to receive more snowfall.

The National Weather Service in Rapid City has extended their WINTER STORM WARNING to include the following areas.

  • Northeastern Foothills
  • Central and Southern Black Hills
  • Custer
  • Keystone
  • Hill City
  • Sturgis
  • Hot Springs
  • Piedmont
  • Nemo Road
  • Accumulations of 3-7 inches. Locally, higher amounts can be expected in this new Winter Storm Warning.
  • The Winter Storm Warning in the northern Black Hills and parts of Crook County could see increased accumulation amounts than previously forecasted. 7-12 inches, with locally, higher amounts possible.
  • Blowing snow is a distinct possibility this evening, along with icy and snow covered roads, making travel hazardous at times
  • Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for all counties in our viewing area south of Interstate 90, for snow totals from 2-5 inches. Locally, higher amounts possible.




  • Between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Saturday morning until Sunday morning at 2 a.m.
  • 5-10 inches of snow in the Northern Hills. Locally, higher amounts of 12 inches possible (Pink)
  • 2-5 inches of snow in areas under Winter Weather Advisory. Locally, higher amounts possible (Purple)
  • Gusty northwesterly and northerly winds up to 30-35 mph could lead to blowing snow Saturday evening
  • Icy and snow-covered roads could lead to hazardous driving conditions
  • Conditions along Interstate 90 between Kadoka, South Dakota and Sheridan, Wyoming will be hazardous for travel at times.

A WINTER STORM WARNING has been issued for areas of the Black Hills


A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY has been issued for areas of the foothills, northeast Wyoming, far southwest South Dakota and Interstate 90 from Kadoka, South Dakota to Sheridan, Wyoming until 2 a.m. Sunday.


GFS Snow accumulation model toward Sunday at 2 AM. This is only a rough estimate, and totals will be higher and lower with emphasis in isolated areas.
