Winter high school sports in South Dakota remain on schedule

PIERRE, S.D. – The winter high school sports season is on track to start on time in South Dakota.

The South Dakota High School Activities Association Board of Directors held a special meeting Tuesday to discuss the start date for the winter sports season.

After hearing from multiple athletic directors and school officials, no motion was made to delay the start date.

That means gymnastics and wrestling events can start on November 30, girls basketball on December 3 and boys basketball on December 10.

The board did pass a motion to “highly recommend” that individual school districts implement restrictions on attendance and require spectators to wear masks.

In addition, the board voted to allow those athletes who attend schools on reservations and are unable to compete in sports due to Covid-19 restrictions to work with the activities association to establish alternatives for their athletes.

This would give those athletes two options: either compete in a special spring sports league or apply for an additional year of eligibility.

An option was passed earlier this fall that allows athletes to transfer to another school and play immediately.
