Wilson Elementary placed on ALICE lockdown

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Staff at Wilson Elementary School initiated the school’s top alert lockdown this afternoon in response to what sounded like gunshots in the area.

According to RCAS spokesperson Katy Urban, kindergartners were being dismissed at about 2:50 p.m. when a teacher reported what sounded like gunshots nearby the school. Staff rushed the children back inside and initiated the school district’s ALICE protocol.

Within a few minutes, it was found that the sound was that of fireworks being set off and the lockdown was lifted.

ALICE, which stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate, is the safety procedure used in the event of an armed intruder.
