Whitewood man gets four years for animal neglect

WHITEWOOD, S.D. — A man has been sentenced to four years behind bars after law enforcement located more than 20 malnourished dogs at his Whitewood home.

Thomas Mraz was 50-years-old in October of 2020 when he was initially arrested on five counts of felony animal cruelty and 26 counts of animal neglect.

All felony charges were dropped in a plea agreement with the State. Mraz pleaded guilty to 12 counts of animal neglect.

Judge Comer sentenced him to one year with eight months suspended on each count, for a total of 48 months to run consecutive to each other. Those charges will run concurrently to his current sentence; Mraz is serving time for a rape charge in Meade County.
