Whitewood bans outside open fires until further notice

WHITEWOOD, S.D. — With a combination of the recent high temperatures and drought, the threat to fires is high.

From July 28, 2021 until further notice, the City of Whitewood has issued a ban on outside open fires, which includes firepits, burn barrels, or other homemade pits.

Hot embers emitted from the pits combined with the drought and hot temperatures risks the likelihood of starting a fire. The threat of a serious fire from open burning would endanger the public and the property of Whitewood.

Whitewood has recently updated city ordinance to allow a covered 36 inch fire pit that was available for purchase at a retail store, but has been banned until further notice.

However, propane firepits and charcoal grills are still permitted.

The Whitewood Police Department also notes that a person who sets fire is liable for civil damages for all injury and fire suppression and extinguishment costs caused by the fire.
