Where is violent assault most common in Rapid City?
RAPID CITY, S.D. – If you’ve lived in Rapid City, you’ve likely heard a good deal about ‘Knollwood,’ ‘The Big Three,’ and ‘Surfwood,’ all terms referring to a small area of the city between Surfwood Drive and Knollwood Drive that has been continuously plagued by violent crime. While that area does suffer from a crime problem, it’s not the only part of Rapid City that does.
There were 104 assaults reported in Rapid City in January. Here’s a look at where assaults were most common in Rapid City last month, and a look at some of the hotspots:

The area bounded by Meadowlark Road, Lacrosse Street, and E North Street had the densest concentration of assaults in January. It is notable for being adjacent to Thomson Park, where two people were shot dead by Arnson Absolu in 2020.

Just before it meets Interstate 90, there is a pocket of violent crime on the west side of Haines Avenue. It is centered on Ridgestone Mobile Home Park. In 2020, Ridgestone faced controversy when it refused to meet city water codes, prompting action by Mayor Steve Allender.
