What to know about the Rapid City Kennel Club Dog Show
The RC Kennel Club Dog Show kicked off on Friday, October 21.
RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Kennel Club hosted their annual dog show, something that they’ve been doing since the 1980’s.
History of dog shows
Dog shows have been around since the mid 1800’s and started as a side attraction to cattle shows in England.
They were then brought to the U.S. in the 1900’s.
Barb Paur, the Assistant Show Chairman for the RC Kennel Club said, “Showing dogs is the number two sport, oldest only outdone by horse racing.”
Since the RC Kennel Club started, they have done 143 shows.
The competition
The RC Kennel Club Dog Show runs October 21 – 23.
Dogs are first grouped by breed and judged against each other.
They are judged using health and appearance standards that are set for each breed.
The winner of each breed will be crowned best of breed and go on to compete against the other best of breed winners for best in show.
Some of the winners form the dog show in Rapid City will even go on to compete in the big dog show at Madison Square Garden.
Interested in participating?
Bill Fletcher, dog owner, breeder, and avid dog show participant gave some advice, “Find a local kennel club because there’s a lot of people there that’ll be willing to help you. And if you have a specific breed in mind, find local, if you can, breeders of that breed and educate yourself and look at all the information you can from AKC about the breed to make sure that it’s going to work for you.”
You can also visit the RC Kennel Cub website for more information on the show, as well as some other programs that they offer.
