Western Dakota Tech to host welding competition for high school students

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Area high school students are invited to demonstrate their welding skills at Western Dakota Tech’s Welding Lab.

This is the first welding competition put on by WDT’s Welding Program, and it will include prizes for the top three placers.

Participants will be tested on fillet welds and T-joints performed in horizontal and vertical positions. The work will be conducted on steel material.

According to WDT’s Welding Program Director, Michael Prugh, student competitors will also have the opportunity to learn more about welding as a career.

“We are starting this Welding Competition to bring awareness to the career field and showcase the talent of the high school students. In addition, the students will have the opportunity to learn about our welding program, find out about welding careers, and meet some of our industry partners.”

The event will be held tomorrow, February 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
