West Boulevard area could see better roads, water mains
Decision goes to the city council.
RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City’s Public Works Committee gave the green light Tuesday to several road reconstruction projects on the city’s west side to the tune of $4.3 million.
Updates would include new sewer and drainage lines, as well as new water mains. The roads would also be receiving new pavement, curbs and gutters, and sidewalk ramps at all intersections. More details on the projects are below.
The proposal now awaits approval from the Rapid City Common Council at their meeting Monday.
If approved, reconstruction would begin in the spring with completion dates of late summer/early fall of 2019.
FULTON STREET RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT ($2,698,000)
This project would reconstruct Fulton Street from Ninth Street to Tompkins Street and would include replacement of 1600 feet of the existing 6-inch clay pipe sanitary sewer mains with new 8-inch mains.
It would also install a new sewer main within the Fulton Street right-of-way. It allows for the reconnection of existing sewer and water services to the new mains. A new eight-inch water main will be installed, replacing the existing 4-inch water main.
The project also calls for installation of 1,800 feet of storm sewer from Tompkins Street to West Boulevard to facilitate drainage.
Street reconstruction will include new pavement, curb and gutter, handicap ramps at all intersections, off-street public parking facilities near the Eleventh Street intersection, driveway approaches and spot repair of the sidewalk to facilitate water and sewer service line installations.
ST. CLOUD RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT ($1,425,000)
This project calls for the reconstruction of St. Cloud Street from Summit Boulevard to West Boulevard. Existing infrastructure containing aging cast iron and vitrified clay pipes in the area are in poor condition and exceeded useful life.
The project includes replacement of 1,200 feet of the existing 6-inch water main with a new 10-inch water main, which will connect to the existing water main stub near the intersection with West Boulevard.
The project will also replace 1,100 feet of existing sanitary sewer with a new sanitary sewer main and install 1,200 feet of a new storm sewer along the project corridor to reduce minor flooding to adjacent properties.
Street reconstruction will include new curb and gutter throughout the corridor, handicap ramps at all intersections, driveway approaches, and spot repair of the sidewalk to facilitate water and sewer line installations.
SEVENTH STREET WATER EXTENSION/ST. JAMES SANITARY SEWER PROJECT ($195,000)
This project calls for the extension of an 8-inch water main on Seventh Street between St. Cloud Street and Franklin Street. It will also extend an 8-inch sanitary sewer main on St. James Street from Mount Rushmore Road toward Ninth Street to the property line of 827 St. James.
The project will tie existing nonconforming sewer services into the proposed sewer main.
