West, who served more than two decades with South Dakota DCI and eight years in the South Dakota Army National Guard, grew up in Philip and attended Black Hills State University. He graduated South Dakota’s law enforcement academy in 1992 and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s national academy before working for Deadwood Police, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, and Deadwood Ambulance Service.

“During my career in law enforcement, I have worked closely with South Dakota Chiefs of Police and Sheriffs, to include Meade County,” West says. “I understand and recognize the important role of the Sheriff and I am excited for the opportunity to take on this new challenge.”

West and his family have lived in Meade County for the last 18 years; he and his wife, Cassandra, have four children.

Current Meade County Sheriff, Ron Merwin, has been in the role since 1990.
