WAVI offers community members to Adopt A Family for the holidays
It’s your chance to gift a family some joy this holiday season, by adopting a family being served by WAVI.
WAVI (Working Against Violence Inc.) works to create a community free of domestic abuse, sexual assault, and human trafficking.
Those interested in donating (or financially adopting a family for the holidays) can choose to go shopping for a family or donate a dollar amount online.
With some shelters limiting services because of the pandemic, WAVI continues their work and remains open.
Kristina Simmons, WAVI Development Director, says, “It really has affected us because we are the larger shelter in the area, we have definitely seen an increase in our crisis calls – general calls. The need is still there and it is still great.”
A third of the families served are in the shelter and 2/3 are out of the shelter.
The out pour of support from the community also helps to heal the victims.
Simmons says, “They see that the community is supporting them, so somebody that has been isolated and they feel alone, that nobody cares, ‘I don’t have a support system’, then really your whole community is lifting you up – that boosts their spirit and makes them want to continue moving forward on that path to healing and independence.”
The organization also needs volunteers to help sort donations on Wednesdays and Fridays. They ask volunteers are healthy and wear a mask while volunteering.
WAVI is continuously taking donations, the link to the wish list can be found by clicking here.
