Watertown man identified as victim in fatal crash near Sturgis

STURGIS, S.D. — A 70 year-old Watertown man has been identified as the victim in the Friday afternoon motorcycle-versus-vehicle crash near Sturgis.

Theodore Moe was thrown from his motorcycle and pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, Kay Moe, 71, was also thrown and received serious non-life threatening injuries.

The passenger was wearing a helmet and the driver was not.

Charges are pending against the driver of the Dodge Ram, 52-year-old John Kulp of Nemo.

STURGIS, S.D. — A Friday afternoon motorcycle-vehicle crash south of Sturgis has left one person dead, and another seriously injured.

Preliminary crash information indicates that a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup was southbound on Vanocker Canyon Road when it moved to the northbound lane to pass a group of motorcycles, but ended up colliding with a northbound 2018 2018 Harley-Davidson FLHX motorcycle carrying two people.

Both occupants on the motorcycle were thrown from their vehicle. The 70-year-old male driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the 71-year-old female passenger received serious non-life threatening injuries and was airlifted to a local hospital.

The passenger on the motorcycle was wearing a helmet, but the driver was not.

The 52-year-old male driver of the pickup was not injured, and he was wearing a seatbelt.

The names of the three people involved are not being released pending notification of family members.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
