WATCH: Peace Officer Memorial Day Ceremony
RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and the Rapid City Police Department, in conjunction with the Fraternal Order of Police, will jointly host a short memorial service in front of the Public Safety Building on Friday, May 15th at 9 AM.
This is the exact time that in most years the National Peace Officers’ Memorial starts on the west lawn of the United States Capitol. Due to the ongoing pandemic, that event was cancelled. Also cancelled was the traditional South Dakota Law Enforcement Memorial in Pierre.
In order to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, PENNCO Sheriff and RCPD have collectively asked many of the law enforcement agencies in the area to join together for a moment of silence on Friday morning.
Several agencies plan to participate: Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Rapid City Police Department, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, Box Elder Police Department, FBI, Homeland Security, Game Fish & Parks and US Park Service. South Dakota Highway Patrol, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Drug Enforcement Administration and United States Marshals Service have also been invited.
