WATCH LIVE: RCAS to give announcement regarding coronavirus

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Rapid City Area Schools has scheduled a press conference to discuss the District’s response to COVID-19 at 2 p.m.

Starting on Monday, South Dakota public schools K through 12 will be closed for at least one week in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

RCAS held its own conference to discuss the plans that they have in place at this time.

“At the end of the day, the health and safety and well-being of not only our staff, and our students but our entire community it really needs to be taken under consideration,” says Dr. Lori Simon the superintendent.

With the closing comes the suspension of school-related events such as sporting events, musical concerts, and school-sponsored trips.

“We’re going to take two days at the start of next week for our teachers to come together as grade levels, to come together as departments and teams to have some good planning time,” says Dr. Simon.

If RCAS needs to be closed for longer than a week, they do plan to help provide a meal daily for those students that need it.

“A bag lunch really is the best option for us because we want to follow CDC guidelines and make sure that we’re maintaining safe distance and proximity, at the same time we know that food insecurity is so real for many of our children and our families,” says Dr. Simon.

As the spread continues this plan remains flexible and could change.
