WATCH: Custer officers reunite baby elk with mother

CUSTER COUNTY, S.D. — A baby elk was spotted on the north side of Custer June 8 unable to escape fencing on the east side of Highway 16. Mom was seen on the west side of the highway.

Law enforcement was not able to reunite them and hoped that they would work it out, however, on Wednesday morning they were still separated by the fence and highway.

A couple of Conservation Officers and a Deputy Sheriff hiked out into the field and were able to catch the baby by hand.
After placing him in a kennel they carried him across the highway, where he was released through the fence.
Mom was waiting just over the hill and they were finally reunited.
