Warrant Scam Alert
Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and Rapid City Police Department are warning citizens of a phone scam in which callers are demanding money to resolve warrants. In this case, thieves are identifying themselves to be with the check fraud division, but they have previously claimed to be with our Civil or Warrant Divisions. The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office generally does not collect warrants or fines over the phone. An individual would be asked to settle a warrant fee in person.
Both Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and Rapid City Police Department are allowed to take payment over the phone for certain types of warrants. If you have received one of these calls or would like to see if you have an outstanding warrant click here.
Residents are warned, any time they receive a call from law enforcement demanding or soliciting money over the phone, to be skeptical. Hang up and call law enforcement directly.
