Voter registration deadline now less than a week away

Voter registration and absentee ballot application forms are due Oct. 22.

RAPID CITY, S.D. – We’re less than a week away from the deadline to register to vote. to make sure you’re ready to cast your vote for this year’s election, you want to double check your voter registration information.

South Dakota’s deadline to register to vote falls 15 days before the election every year. This year, that deadline is Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. That means getting your voter registration or absentee ballot application forms into your local county auditor’s office by that date. If you’re mailing it in, an Oct. 22 postmarked date is not enough.

For residents who may not have a permanent address, there are ways to still register.

“Our RVers will use campgrounds and those sorts of things,” said Cindy Mohler, chief deputy auditor in Pennington County. “Some people will use a hotel if that happens to be where they’re staying.”

Other reasons to fill out a voter registration, other than registering to vote include:

  • Canceling your voter registration
  • Changing your party affiliation
  • Changing the registration name or address

According to Mohler, the biggest thing people forget when it’s time to register to vote, aside from turning in their registration, is updating it when they move.

“What people need to realize is that if they have moved and they want to vote in their proper district, they do need to get their voter registration address updated with us,” said Mohler.

To find your Voter Registration or Absentee Ballot Application Form, check with your local county auditor office. Pennington County’s information can be found here.
