Vote made on Pennington County Fire workman’s comp

PENNINGTON COUNTY, S.D. — Volunteer firefighters from across Pennington County made their presence known as members of the county commission voted on workman’s compensation for the firefighters.

At the meeting a 3-2 vote resulted in $32,000 dollars being approved for Pennington County Fire for the use of workman’s comp.

Some commissioners said they would approve the money if Pennington County Fire agreed to have board meetings discussing how to reduce cost — something they have already been having for years. And even though Pennington County Fire has had these meetings, it has seen its budget shrinking in spite of rising demands for their service.

“There’s a lot of concern about where the funding is going to go,” said Pennington County Fire Administrator Jerome Harvey. “The demands on the fire service haven’t gone away. Again, it just comes down to the fact that the funding is still needed and shows support by the fire service to the board of commissioners who help bring that point across.”
