Vitalant offering blood donors chance to win summer vacation prizes

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The unofficial start to summer vacation season means fewer blood donors are available to regularly supply patients’ needs. With Memorial Day weekend upon us, Vitalant, formerly United Blood Services, is offering donors the chance to win summer adventure prizes.

Everyone who comes out to donate at a Rapid City Vitalant donation center or blood drive through June 15 will be automatically be entered to win. The “Awemaker’s Adventure Pack Giveaway” includes the following prizes: A Road Trip Adventure Pack with a GoPro HERO7, annual national parks pass and an Airbnb gift card, or a Camping Adventure Pack including camping gear, a solar phone charger and REI gift card.

In all, 22 people across South Dakota, Colorado and Wyoming will win.

“More donors are needed in South Dakota and across the country to continue to meet every patient need before it arises,” Vitalant Senior Director of Donor Recruitment Charlie Propernick said. “Platelets have an especially short shelf life and must be transfused within five days, but because not enough people are donating regularly, even red blood cells which can be transfused up to 42 days after donation are often shipped out to hospitals within just a few days.”

Volunteer blood and platelet donors of all blood types are necessary to ensure hospitals across our area and the country are ready not just for unexpected events, but regular donations also allow for routine surgeries and medical treatments to continue uninterrupted.

Vitalant has donation opportunities seven days a week except for select major holidays. The Rapid City donation center at 2209 W. Omaha St. will be closed on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27.

Appointments can be made at or by calling 605-646-2625.. Walk-ins are welcome.
