Vitalant hosted over 600 blood drives in the Black Hills this year

RAPID CITY, S.D. – As the year ends, businesses are putting together their stats and making new goals for the coming year.

We spoke with Vitalant to get an idea of how many people donated blood, plasma, and platelets this year. Platelets are the clotting factor in the blood, which can be used for cancer and trauma patients. Plasma is the liquid part of the blood that can be used for trauma and burn patients.

“In 2019 we ran over 600 blood drives throughout the Rapid City and surrounding areas, collecting roughly about 15,000 red cells which go to patients in need,” said Brittany Sigel, the donor recruitment manager.

Vitalant hosts blood drives all over the hills. All types of blood donations can save a life and they encourage people to take the leap. You can walk-in or make an appointment to donate.
