Viral Petition to Merge North and South Dakota into Super State ‘MegaKota’

RAPID CITY S.D. – With their powers combined, North and South Dakota could become the super state MEGAKOTA.

One week ago a petition was created on change.org with the intention to merge North and South Dakota. It has since gathered over 16,500 signatures.

The petitions creator Dillan Stewart states “I think it’d be pretty cool to have a state called MegaKota, so yeah.” He also argues that “maybe Puerto Rico can be a state and we wont have to change our flag.” Valid points, however is the world ready for MegaKota?

According to U.S. Census Bureau 760,077 people live in North Dakota and 882,235 live in South Dakota. Which brings the MegaKota population total to 1,642,312.

Although the petition has been gaining popularity online, the eventuality of it becoming reality are bleak to say the least. Combining states is not one of the powers granted to the president.

According to Article IV, Section 3 of the Constitution, “New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.”

The future of MegaKota may be more complicated than the petitioners had hoped.
