Victim in Christmas Eve homicide identified

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Authorities have identified a Rapid City man as the victim in a December 24th fatal shooting.

31-year-old Vernall Marshall was shot and killed last Thursday night in the 1000 block of Silverleaf Avenue in Rapid City.

According to Chief Don Hedrick of the Rapid City Police Dept., police responded to a 911 call regarding gunshots in the area just after 11 p.m. When they arrived, police found Marshall in the street with multiple gunshot wounds. Hedrick says “lifesaving measures were taken”, but the man was later pronounced dead at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital.

RCPD spokesperson Brendyn Medina says police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

No arrests have been made at this time, but according to Medina, investigators are following leads that they “believe will lead…to those involved in the shooting.”

This is the 12th homicide in Rapid City in 2020.
