VFW Post 1273 partners with Front Porch Coalition to raise awareness for teen suicide
The Front Porch Coalition partnered with VFW Post 1273 to sell cookies and hot chocolate in an effort to raise awareness for teen suicide.
(CORRECTION: 12/07/20 @ 3:45 p.m.): Front Porch Coalition has provided the following clarification of the suicide rate: “Overall for 2020 deaths by suicide are down from 2020. For our teens, there is an increase in deaths by suicide and this is how it breaks down. These numbers have been verified by the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and by Front Porch Coalition. For our teens who are 18 years of age and under there has been a 66.66% increase from 2019. For our teens who are 19 years of age and under there has been a 60 % increase from 2020.
We apologize for any misunderstanding and was not by any means trying to inflate the truth and were reporting what we thought to be accurate numbers. However, it is still alarming to us to see the increase in our teens, and have taken action with our new youth group Defying Defeat.”
RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Grinch made an appearance at the VFW Post 1273 Saturday afternoon.
It was part of an effort to raise awareness about suicide among teens. The Grinch came along to encourage teens and children to have a cookie after they were done helping to decorate the tree at Main Street Square.
Those who attended the event were able to support the Front Porch Coalition by purchasing a cup of hot chocolate and a cookie for five dollars.
“(Suicide) in our teens has increased by 233 percent, so we’re out here advocating to make sure that there’s no more deaths by suicide from our teenagers,” said the Grinch.
