Vehicle submerged in Rapid Creek Sunday morning

UPDATE (11:00) — The driver of the vehicle has been identified as 23 year-old Ivan Rice of Rapid City. Rice was alone in the vehicle.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is handling the accident investigation. The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is handling the circumstances surrounding the accident and coroner duties. An autopsy will be performed. The Rapid City Fire Department and Rapid Valley Fire Department also responded to the scene.

UPDATE (9:20) — According to South Dakota Highway Patrol, one person was driving along Reservoir Road and went to take a left hand turn onto Green Valley Drive. The vehicle then crashed through the barrier over Rapid Creek and was submerged.

Sgt. Chris Hislip of the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office said the male driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Their identity has not been released at this time.

Crews are working to determine if any passengers were in the vehicle.

RAPID CITY, S.D. — A vehicle was found upside down and submerged in the waters of Rapid Creek Sunday morning.

Pennington County Sheriff’s Office has closed the eastbound lane on Green Valley Drive while the Rapid City/ Pennington County Water Rescue Team removes the vehicle. It is unknown at this time if there is anyone in the vehicle, or if anyone has been injured.
