UPDATE: Scuffle results in shooting, suspect transported to Monument Health with serious non-life-threatening injury
UPDATE: According to an email from Tim Bormann, the Chief of Staff at the Office of the Attorney General, at approximately 11:15 a.m., Whitewood Police responded to a report of a male acting erratically.
After arriving on the scene, a physical altercation ensued at which point one of the officers fired their service weapon, striking the male.
The 40-year-old male was transported to Monument Health in Rapid City, was a serious but non-life-threatening injury.
The DCI, took over the lead on the investigation of the shooting at the request of the Whitewood Police Department. The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and South Dakota Highway Patrol are also assisting on the investigation.
A case report will be reviewed and a summary of the incident prepared and released by the Attorney General’s Office in about 30 days.
WHITEWOOD, S.D. — Whitewood Police and multiple agencies are investigating an incident at a local gas station Friday.
Law enforcement was on scene at the Sonset gas station located in the 1300 block of Laurel St. in Whitewood around 11:30 a.m.
Laurel St. between Sherman St. and Fillmore St. was temporarily shut down as police investigated the area.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol confirmed that the Whitewood Police Department is the lead agency in the on-going investigation.
A Lawrence County Deputy on scene tells NewsCenter1 more information will be released later today.
