Unidentified body found in aftermath of Rockerville wildfire


ROCKERVILLE, S.D. — The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in the investigation of a vehicle fire that resulted in the discovery of a fatality.

At 9:41 p.m. Thursday evening, firefighters were called to a remote area off Foster Gulch Road in the Rockerville area. According to a Facebook post from PennCo Sheriff’s department, the caller reported hearing a loud popping sound, then seeing fire.

After fire crews contained a small wildfire estimated at a quarter acre, they found a destroyed vehicle with a body inside. Neither the person nor the vehicle have been identified at this time.

Agencies responding to the incident include Battle Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Rockerville Volunteer Fire Department, US Forest Service, State Wildland Fire, State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.
