Two South Dakota Sioux tribes apply to grow industrial hemp

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Two South Dakota Sioux tribes have applied to grow industrial hemp.

The Oglala and the Flandreau Santee Sioux filed with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Governor Kristi Noem remains strongly against legalizing industrial hemp production, but state law does not apply to tribes.

With the two South Dakota applications, 11 tribes in 11 states have filed applications with the USDA.
