Tune in LIVE Tuesday for South Dakota’s State of the State Address
PIERRE, S.D. – Tuesday, the 2023 Session of the South Dakota Legislature begins with Governor Noem’s State of the State Address. The address is a chance for the Governor to lay out her priorities.
Noem’s agenda includes updating the state’s prison system by building a new women’s prison in Rapid City and a new men’s prison in Sioux Falls. Another key topic will be what the legislature is going to do with South Dakota’s $423 million surplus.
State Representative Mike Derby who is the incoming chair of the appropriations committee said, “We’re going to hear probably a lot about money, obviously, a talk about the strong economy. Number two will be probably that we’ve got 265,000,001 time funds to deploy. And I’m sure we’ll hear about where those moneys are going to go.”
Last year, Governor Noem made a push for a repeal of the state tax on groceries, which will most likely also be on the agenda.
