Transcript released of Rodney Berget’s execution

PIERRE, S.D. – The state Department of Corrections has released the transcript of Rodney Berget’s execution.

The death penalty was carried out for Berget in October. He was convicted of murdering prison guard Ronald “RJ” Johnson in 2011 during a failed escape from the South Dakota State Penitentiary.


Warden Young ‐ “You can open the blinds.”

Corrections Secretary Kaemingk ‐ “We have contacted the governor of South Dakota, the chief justice of the South Dakota Supreme Court, and the attorney general’s office. No appeals are pending, and no motions have been filed to set aside the warrant of death sentence and execution in the matter of the State of South Dakota vs. Rodney Berget. Therefore, you may proceed to carry out the order of the

Young ‐ “Rodney Berget, you have been convicted of the crime of first-degree murder of Ronald ‘RJ’ Johnson. You have been sentenced to death by lethal injection for this crime. This is the time and place for the execution of that sentence. Do you have any last words? Now is that time.”

Inmate Berget ‐ “Sorry for the delay, I got caught in traffic. But seriously, I want to thank everybody that was there for me. I love you all. Uh… [shaky voice]. Uh, I love you Tammy. I know you’re here with me. And Sonny Boy – I love you and I’ll meet you out there. I love you Gigi.

“Is it supposed to feel like that? [groaning] “Ahh” [heavy breathing] [snoring]


Young ‐ “Please retrieve the coroner. Would you please perform an exam?”

Coroner – “The time of pronouncement is 7:37 [p.m.]. Thank you.”

Young ‐ “You can now close the blinds.”
