Top Performer: Rebecca Morgan
RAPID CITY, S.D. – Having a young roster is not always a bad thing. The Rapid City Christian volleyball team found out as much this past season.
The Comets qualified for the state volleyball tournament for the first time since 1998. Since Rapid City Christian only had two seniors on its roster, the team relied on several underclassmen including this month’s NewsCenter1 Top Performer.
Rebecca Morgan played a major role on the Rapid City Christian volleyball team this season.
The outside hitter could not only score, but she was a defensive specialist, as well.
“Rebecca is a natural athlete,” Rapid City Christian volleyball coach Jessie Cantrell said. “She’s very driven, very competitive. She gives a 100 percent on the floor and she’s very skilled.”
The 5-foot, 5-inch tall junior started playing volleyball in the third grade and has been competing on the varsity team at Rapid City Christian since she was an eighth grader.
“I have two older sisters who went into volleyball and I would get dragged to every single volleyball game,” Rebecca said. “I just learned a lot about the sport and had a really big interest in it. I was like, ‘I want to play volleyball too when I’m older.’ So I decided to start playing and I just kept with it and I really enjoy it today.”
Rebecca led the Comets this season with 391 digs and she also had 92 kills.
“We’ve played her all around this year,” Jessie Cantrell said. “Sometimes she plays libero. Sometimes plays all around. Just whatever we think is best for the team that we’re playing. She does a good job either way. So playing her all the way around, even her being as small as she is, she does a great job because she’s just so aggressive.”
Although the Comets recently finished eighth at the State ‘A’ Volleyball Tournament, Rebecca says she isn’t satisfied and has higher expectations for next season.
“Yes it was amazing to get to the state tournament,” Rebecca said. “But obviously we wanted to place a little bit higher than we did. So next year we’re looking to get back there and move up on the totem pole.”
Congratulations to Rebecca Morgan on being named a NewsCenter1 Top Performer.
