Top Performer: Anna Haugen
RAPID CITY, S.D. – It was an up-and-down season for the South Dakota School of Mines women’s basketball team.
But the Lady Hardrockers still improved throughout the year and saw strong individual performances.
South Dakota School of Mines junior Anna Haugen played with great defensive intensity and effort all season.
In fact, she was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week three separate times this past season.
The 5-foot-11 forward led the team with 202 total rebounds and was second in the conference averaging 9.2 rebounds per game.
“I’ve always enjoyed rebounding because I think offensive rebounds are kind of a big game changer in a lot of situations,” Anna Haugen said. “Rebounding I think a lot of it is effort and being able to predict where the ball is going to go. Also just finding those gaps in between to go get the ball so.”
“Defensively, Anna is the best rebounder I have coached,” South Dakota Mines women’s basketball coach Ryan Larsen said. “She’s got the innate ability to read the ball coming off the rim. That’s a skill. But after that, its chasing down basketballs. Loose balls that she goes and gets. That’s where she gets a majority of her rebounds.”
Many times throughout the year, Haugen was called on to guard the other team’s best player.
“When you can guard a point guard and then switch on to their best post player, there’s not many people that can do that.” Ryan Larsen said. “That’s just how versatile a defender as she is.”
Congratulations to Anna Haugen for being named a NewsCenter 1 Top Performer.
