Third COVID-19 death reported in South Dakota

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – A third South Dakotan has died from the COVID-19 virus, Avera Health officials report Friday.

The individual was a resident at Avera Prince of Peace Retirement Community. Since March 31, three residents have tested positive at the facility.

“The health and safety of our residents is our priority, and we are deeply saddened by this loss. We will take all precautions possible to stop the spread of this virus in our facility,” said Justin Hinker, administrator for Avera Prince of Peace.

Officials say they are following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control in “setting-up a unit that is separated from the other units where all COVID-positive residents will be staying.”

The S.D. Department of Health’s website is updated by noon every day and does not reflect the third death as of Friday afternoon.
