The Rapid City Fire Department deployed for California wildfire

RAPID CITY, S.D. — A busy wildfire season in the American west has been keeping Rapid City firefighters busy.

Requests for Rapid City firefighters to join the efforts elsewhere come from other departments in need of assistance, and with widespread drought conditions this year, a number of departments have called.

Up to nine city firefighters have been deployed at any given time. Right now seven are deployed between California and Wyoming for a two-week detail, and are undergoing a crew change. RCFD finds the deployments invaluable as they provide experience, training, revenue, and mutual aid.

“When we have a large catastrophic fire here in the Black Hills, then that mutual aid will be reciprocated and other departments will come help us,” said Lt. Jim Bussell, the public information officer for RCFD.

Other local fire departments are also lending a helping hand and deploying their firefighters, such as Interior, Battle Creek, and Spearfish.
