The latest April winter storm forecast

UPDATE: I-90 is now closed from the Ellsworth Air Force Base Exit 67 to Sioux Falls Exit 396.

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Chief meteorologist Bob Riggio and meteorologist Brant Beckman have your latest update on the late season winter storm.

The storm has created road closures and dangerous travel conditions throughout South Dakota.

It’s also led to the closure of Interstate 90 from Box Elder to Sioux Falls, nearly across the entire state.

While the western edge of the region is experiencing a winter storm warning through Thursday at midnight, farther east has an active blizzard warning until 6 p.m. Thursday.

As the night continues, slushy areas are turning to ice and Pennington County Emergency Management has asked motorists to stay off the roads. County plows have also been pulled from the roads for the night.

Additional snowfall is expected to continue later this evening into late Thursday night.

Wind gusts could reach as high as 45 mph overnight and 50 mph on Thursday, potentially causing white-out conditions.
