The 72nd annual Central States Fair is under way

The 72nd annual Central States Fair kicks off this week. There will be amusement rides, food vendors, concerts, and events for the entire family.

Festivities start on Friday at the Central States Fairgrounds. This includes an opening day ceremony at 3 p.m., and Rapid City Mayor Steve Allender plans to join in on the festivities. Participants can bring a non-perishable food item and donate to the Boy Scout Food Drive for free admission.

“There are five new rides for everyone to enjoy this year,” said Central States Fair General Manager Ron Jeffries.

The rides and equipment at the fairgrounds are maintained by Carnival Americana. The company has taken the proper precautions to ensure safety at the fairgrounds, according to Jeffries.

“They take a week off before our fair and come out and get set up,” said Jeffries. “Their employees have time to go through all the rides, clean everything, and they are well-rested.”

The fair will host a lot of its traditional festivities, including an Indigenous Celebration & Expo on Saturday. The cultural celebration will offer education on the Native American culture.

The fair lasts through Aug. 27. If you plan on joining in on the festivities, click here.
