“Thank you for welcoming us”: Ellsworth leadership commends community connection for Air Show

ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. — Years of planning are about to pay off – the 2022 Ellsworth Air and Space Show takes off this weekend.

“It’s our hope, though, as people come and see what it’s like to be inside the gates of Ellsworth, to see what it is, to interact with our raider airmen and see what the mission is that we do, that they’ll have a better understanding and appreciation of what we do, and we can strengthen the relationship with the community and our partners,” says Col. Joseph Sheffield, 28th Bomb Wing Commander.

Lt Col Tony Nishimura, the air show director, says, “It’s kind of like a concert, if you will, you know, or a very, very coordinated dance of seeing everything falling into place and seeing how everybody is getting what they need to get done so we can provide a phenomenal air show.”

High flying displays of aviation mastery combined with static aircraft giving the public a unique chance to see inside the U.S. military.

“Typically, we have missions that are going regularly day in and day out, whether here locally for training or some actually contingency overseas, but we’re opening the gates so you can come here and enjoy the environment, meet our team, and see the mission that we provide.”

And this is a big year – it’s the 80th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid and the 75th anniversary of the Air Force.

“We’re excited to have the Navy involved, because this year is the 80th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid, our wing has three of the units that participated in the Raid, and we did it in conjunction with the Navy, so that’s one of the reasons why I invited them to be part of this historic year and historic air show.”

Bringing our community together and reminding us that these airmen are our community, too.

“Thank you for welcoming us; thank you for being a part of our lives and our mission, and thanks for supporting Ellsworth now and as we go into the future,” Col. Sheffield says.
