Terry Peak announces dates for closing and pond skim event

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Skiers and snowboarders have one more week to shred the gnar at Terry Peak this season because next Sunday, April 3, will be the final day to take a trip down the mountain.

The season started rough for Terry Peak managers, having to push the opening to mid-December.

From there, the lack of fresh snow got in the way, but workers still found a way to keep people happy.

“We ended up with about 85 inches of snowfall, which is quite a bit less than our average,” Marketing Director Linda Derosier said. “But like I said, we were able to make plenty of snow on most of our major runs to keep us going up through now. So technically our conditions on those major runs have been really good.”

Terry Peak will be open daily through next Sunday, promising lots of fun in the final week including the pond skim, which is now in its second year.

Skiers will race down the mountain and try to skid across across a small body of water, and avoid falling into it, in a fun way to cap off the season.

“It’s always hard to see our season end. It’s always sad to see it end, but you know what? If you could do it all year-round, it wouldn’t be so special,” Derosier said. “So, just wait ’til next season, make sure you get your season passes in October, and then come and enjoy another winter next season.”

The pond skim is Saturday, with registration getting underway at 9:30 a.m.
