SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — South Dakota’s team of 14-and-under hockey players leaves for Michigan on Wednesday to prepare for the USA Hockey Tier II 14U National Tournament, held March 31 to April 4 in Kalamazoo.

Team South Dakota is comprised of 20 youth athletes ages 13 and 14 from communities across the state. Players skate for their local hockey associations during the regular season and then come together to form Team SD for tournament play.

Team SD has played in 20 hockey games since last fall and the players are enthusiastic about heading to Michigan for the national tournament.

“It feels great to have this opportunity. We have a bunch of great players, some of the best players in the state,” said forward Cameron Ritter of Rapid City. “We’re going to go and get the job done.”

Teams from across the country will compete in three rounds of pool play, with the top teams advancing to the championship rounds.

“Last year we came off of a tough loss against Alaska in the quarterfinals, and they ended up winning the national championship,” said forward Carter Sanderson of Pierre, who played on Team SD in 2021. “This year we’re looking to come back stronger with good forward lines, a couple of great defensemen and really good goaltending. We’re just looking to win a national championship this year.”

Team SD says they will hit the ice for its first game of pool play at 7:30 p.m. EST on Thursday, March 31, versus the Alaska Oilers. The team will then go on to play the York (Pennsylvania) Devils at 11:30 p.m. EST on April 1, and the Indiana Irish Rovers at 1:45 p.m. EST on April 2.

“Having the opportunity to play with a good group of guys is one of the best parts of playing on Team SD,” said goalie Carson Hundstad of Aberdeen. “And the friendships, the good teams we’ve played and traveling around and playing games.”

The Tier II 14U National Championship Game will be played at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 4, with all the games available for viewing online at Hockey TV.
