Take four, leaf one: PennCo Master Gardeners host annual plant swap

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Plant enthusiasts flocked to the Central States Fairgrounds early Saturday morning. The Pennington County Master Gardeners hosted their annual plant share.

Some attendees lined up over an hour before the doors opened at 8 a.m. to have the first picks of a wide variety of plants at 9 a.m.

All people needed to bring was a plant in exchange for a ticket, allowing them to take four plants home with them.

For the Master Gardeners, it’s about rooting for the beginners.

“The whole purpose of this is to help people starting with gardening and to give them a really inexpensive way to get a start,” said Mary Deibert, Master Gardener. “So that’s what we’re all about. Education and helping them get started.”

She says they had more plants available this year after COVID cancelled last year’s event. The plants went quickly on a first come, first serve basis.
