Suspects charged after Wounded Knee shooting

PINE RIDGE, S.D. — Four suspects are facing charges after allegedly firing a ‘high powered rifle’ in Wounded Knee on Tuesday morning.

Devin Bear Eagle and Lathan Lucero, both 18, and two minors are charged with aggravated weapons offense, violence to a police officer, assault in the first-degree, eluding police, and public intoxication.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety says that officers responded to gunshots being fired in the area on Tuesday morning. When they arrived on scene, the suspects fled in a vehicle, and then on foot.

One of the suspects fired a high powered rifle at an officer — hitting his unit several times. All suspects fled into a field northeast of Wounded Knee housing. Officers are still in the area searching for them.

According to Lt. Carleen Janis with OST Department of Public Safety, a fifth suspect thought to be in connection to the shooting was detained immediately after the incident, but was not charged.
