Suspect in custody after attempted carjacking

RAPID CITY, S.D. — One man has been arrested by the Rapid City Police Department after attempting to steal a vehicle with two children inside.

According to the RCPD, shortly before 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, an officer was flagged down by a woman who reported that she was the victim of attempted vehicle theft.

The woman told the officer she had parked at Walgreens near Baken Park, stopped to go inside and left her vehicle running with two kids inside. While she was leaving the store she spotted an unknown male getting into the car. She attempted to intervene and was run over as the suspect attempted to flee.

Witnesses gave suspect descriptions, which resulted in the suspect quickly being taken into custody. The suspect, who has not yet been identified, was charged with grand theft and felony hit and run. The children were reported as unharmed and the woman sustained minor injuries.

RCPD spokesman Brendyn Medina emphasized that situations like this should be avoided:

“It’s never advisable to leave a vehicle unattended, unsecured and running”
