Suspect in Custer standoff linked to multiple drug store robberies

RAPID CITY, SD — The Rapid City armed robbery suspect who killed himself after a standoff with police in Custer is now linked to recent drug store robberies.

Investigators say the suspect held-up two Boyd’s Drug Marts on three occasions, two robberies on East Saint Patrick, the other on Mount Rushmore Road.

The third robbery was on Tuesday of last week when the suspect, after securing prescription meds at gunpoint, was located north of Custer and led police into the city.

The suspect turned his gun on himself after a three-hour standoff.

The robbery investigations now come to a close after police were able to link suspect descriptions from witnesses in each robbery.

“Essentially, the manner in which the robberies were executed lead us to believe this has been the lone suspect responsible for all three robberies” said RCPD spokesman Brendyn Medina.

Police say they don’t know the motive for each robbery, but told NewsCenter1 that the suspect demanded the same prescription meds in each case.
