Sunny Lemon’s Cookies: Where art and baking come together

Hayden Clark owns Sunny Lemon’s Cookies, a specialty cookie shop where she herself bakes and decorates specialized cookies.

How did you get started in the cookie business?

“So my oldest son, when he was five, really wanted a shark birthday and I really wanted to give him something unique and different and I had seen these decorated cookies online so I decided I’m going to make shark cookies and we’re just going to see how it goes,” Hayden said. “I did a little bit of research, bought the cutters, made the icing and they didn’t look really bad at all. I thought they looked pretty cute and they tasted really good, so I told my husband that week, I said, ‘I’m going to start a cookie business.'”

Hayden has always loved to bake, all the way back to when she was a little girl. She says every Sunday after church, she would pull out the Mrs. Field Cookbook and pick a cookie and make it for her family.

Hayden says her business is really catered towards the customer.

“You know they want something that represents them. They want something that makes their party or their bridal shower or their baby shower stand out,” said Hayden. “So I really feel like my cookies shine when my customers send me invitations or art or things that represent them as people, and so it feels really personal and it’s elevated and pretty.”

She also says it takes a lot of time depending on how extravagant you can get. Additionally, it took her a lot of time of continually practicing and understanding different techniques.

“There’s so many different techniques with the cookies you can paint, watercolor paint them, you can just do the icing. There’s so many different things you can do,” Hayden added. “I definitely worked really hard to find the perfect recipe.”

Where do you get your inspiration for your designs?

“A lot of my inspiration comes from my customers, but I have always loved art, I’ve always loved to paint,” Hayden said. “I would sit in my room and draw anything that I saw when I was little.”

Despite not having any kind of schooling in art, Hayden relies on her artistic passion, and that has resulted in her cookies.

“But I love to bake and I loved art, so bringing the two of them together and having it be successful was really fun,” she said.
