Summer food programs begin in June

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Many local programs will be offering meals and food to children in need now that the school year is over.

When summer break comes, many children are left without a stable food source, which puts even more pressure on families struggling to put food on the table.

In an effort to reduce child hunger, Feeding South Dakota will begin its Summer Backpack Program the week of June 3. Rapid City has nine sites that distribute food packages to families in need. A complete list of locations and times available to pick up food can be found here.

Many schools in the region will be hosting a free meal program through the summer months as well as part of the Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program. For a complete list of programs, visit this website and click on “Free Feeding Sites” to the left.
